Steve - 5.21

43:30 (8:21)

I ran mostly on streets around my neighborhood, so the pace is faster than usual because most of my runs are on dirt. I made sure I had a pretty good finish to this run, running the last 1.55 in 11:48 (7:37). Felt pretty good for the most part although i was cramping a bit.

Chris - 3.47

23:28 - 6:45 pace

Right before I went on this run I watched a bunch of videos on ESPN.com of College Gameday at Autzen with the crowd going nuts behind them. So I threw on my bright yellow Pit Crew t-shirt and headed out, filled with a bunch of extra energy. It would've been a longer run but I had to get back to eat and shower and head to my niece's birthday party. Perfect weather, and even when it started raining a bit it just put me in a better mood for the big game! GO DUCKS!!!

Luke - 6.25

6.25mi, 49:50 (7:58)

Mile loops of 8:16, 7:58, 7:52, 7:48, and 7:44. Got up at 6am for this; I'm never able to go very fast this early in the morning.

Steve - 4.9

47:08 (9:37)

Ran with my buddy Danny for the first time in a while on the dirt/sand near my house. Took it pretty slow. Nothing much else to report here friends.

Luke - 11

11mi, 80:38 (7:19)

1.6-mile loop in 12:25 and 11:58, 1.4-mile loop in 9:55 and 9:34. It was raining for almost all of this run, but I was only cold for the first half mile before I warmed up.

Luke - 3.25

3.25mi, 26:17 (8:05)

Barely slept last night, so I napped from like 4pm to 9:30 tonight. Got up still tired and played a bit of ping pong with Zack, which got me awake enough to get out to the trail. Only had time for two laps on the trail before the lights went out...I would have done more on the track but I had to go to the bathroom and there was a bum in there (sleeping?) so I just headed home. Glad I at least got a few miles in, even though I felt like I was all warmed up with nowhere to go.

Steve - 5.2

The cold, harsh Southern California winter is here. It's really cold, like below 50 degrees cold. Undeterred, I headed out to Pasadena to run with the Flyers on the glorious mondo track at the California Institute of Technology, known locally as Caltech. I did an easy warmup in the grass and then knocked out a small core session. Followed that up with a 2 mile tempo in just under 13:46 and an easy cooldown in the grass. I felt pretty good about this run. I have been trying to stretch a lot and it seems to helping my hip issues.

Chris - 6.45

48:54 - 7:34 pace

It's runs like this that remind me of why I love running. Slight drizzle out tonight. Wore my thin gloves to ward off the chill but ended up taking them off after a couple miles. I'm in a great mood. I was actually trying to rap out loud to myself during the first mile or two. And yes I suck at it. I got the coupon for the Windows 7 free upgrade in the mail when I got home from work (which I wasn't expecting), and have Game 1 of the World Series queued up to watch on the DVR while I eat dinner and play around with my computer! Also, I e-mailed the events people about not having my official race time posted. Hope I hear back from them tomorrow about it...

I also updated my post about the race on Sunday. Check it out ya'll.

James - 4.1

32:45

I stopped at 12 mins to help a woman lift her buggy (stroller?) up a steep incline. Only for maybe 20 seconds and it was physical work, so I didn't stop my watch.

This felt like a long way but it wasn't! Still, again, no leg trouble, milage is building back up.

Luke - 17

17mi, 2:15:29 (7:58)

Went out and did a long run. Was fine for the first 14 miles, and then I guess some mud got in my callous-cut, cause it really started hurting and the last three miles were probably over 9:00 pace. My foot is still throbbing but I just took some aspirin so hopefully it will be fine and I can walk down to DoughCo and drown my pain in bleu cheese dipping sauce.

Monday, October 26, 2009

Luke - 8.5

8.5mi, 64:29 (7:35)

Mile loops of 7:57, 7:33, 7:40, 7:42, 7:32, 7:13, and 7:04.

Chris - 4.9

36:15 - 7:23 pace

Distance is a slight estimation because I had to walk home due to stomach issues. Other than that I felt pretty good considering it's the day after a race.

P.S. First post on my brand spankin' new laptop!

Alex - 3.14

22:35 (7:11)

Didn't end up running in Seattle so this was my first run in a week. Still very much on the mend, but feeling okay. It's rainy in Eugene, but if you live in the Northwest you better be able to do it in the rain. Go Ducks!

James - 5

35:54

I think I actually have some vaguely interesting things to say today.

I hadn't decided on what sort of run I was going to do when I saw someone running ahead up the road where I was walking. I decided to follow his route! Well I managed it for about 3 minutes before losing sight of him. But it led me into a maze of residential roads that I am unfamiliar with despite how close to my home they are (but they all look pretty similar in my defence, and with our clocks going back an hour this weekend it was really dark, really early). There is no way I'd be able to measure my route as it was a real spaghetti junction of a mish mash, so 5 miles is an estimate based on how well I felt. After I lost the runner I followed a cyclist for another 3 minutes but he then got to his house. Isn't this an exciting way to run?

The other really good news is that I didnt even think about my leg during this! Only when I got home and realised I hadnt thought about it. It's possible I've gotten used to the discomfort, but it must be PARTIALLY because it's gotten better. Celebrations!!

Luke - 6.25

6.25mi, 45:44 (7:19)

Mile loops of 7:47, 7:29, 7:29, 7:11, and 6:46. Felt pretty good today...could be because I (and Zack) got tickets to the University of Southern California versus University of Oregon American Football game. It's Halloween night and Oregon is ranked tenth in the country and USC is ranked fifth...it is going to be a crazy day.

Go ducks!

Steve - 4.8

43:17 (9:01)

Pretty easy effort here on the dirt and sand. Actually a pretty honest pace because the sand is deep some of this course. I'm going to work the mileage up this week and try to hit up a lot of core/stability stuff and weights as well. We'll see how it goes.

Chris- 3.1

18:54

I arrived at Darren's place downtown pretty early, so we had time to put on our bibs and casually jog down to where the start was. They had a whole camp set up in Pioneer Square. We decided to take off for a little more warm-up before returning to check in our clothes at the bag drop area and head over to the starting line. Running downtown sucks b/c you have to stop so often for lights. Darren was shooting for under 25, since he hadn't run in 2 weeks and had been drinking and smoking cigarettes all weekend. I somehow lost him on my walk up to the front of the pack, but it was close to the start time so I couldn't go look around much. I got a good spot this time and was able to get up to speed fairly quickly. I was happy to notice that on the run downhill towards the waterfront that I wasn't being outdistanced terribly quickly by the leaders. I took this as a sign that I am getting faster =). Since they were also doing a 10k and half-marathon for this event, I didn't realize that the first mile marker I saw wasn't mine until I hit my watch and it read '5:03'. Sure enough there was a sign marked 5k in big red letters a little bit after that, so I just hit my split button again. I held my ground for the first 3/4 of a mile, and then 2 or 3 people passed me one at a time. I didn't worry too much about it because I didn't feel like I was slowing down much. I briefly thought about matching pace with one of them (like the cute girl) but realized that I didn't want to risk blowing too much energy that early in the race. My right shin was bothering me somewhat for the first 2 miles; that wasn't fun. I feel like I managed my pace fairly well because when we hit the 2 mile mark I felt like I had enough left in me to put a little more bounce in my stride for the home stretch. In fact someone started to come up behind me as we took a right by the big fountain and headed away from the waterfront, so I took that as extra motivation to lengthen my stride and finish strong. I honestly can't remember much of the last half mile, all I was thinking about was trying to break Zack's PR and hold off the guy behind me. I think he might've actually passed me with a few blocks to go, but he had a ton of kick so there was no way I could go with him. The finish was kind of dumb - the official time had 1:30 on it for the half-marathoners, so I couldn't see what my official time was. Also the last block of the race turned right and went downhill, and then after the finish arch there was a bunch of people standing around (IDIOTS). So after I sprinted downhill I had to break down as fast as I could to avoid running over all of these stupid people. Whatever. I peeled to the right so I could walk up and cheer Darren to the finish line. He ended up at 21:43 with a 6:59 pace. Not bad for a guy who had been drinking the day before and went to bed at 2am, lol. We went for a very short cooldown jog before going to get our free beers. After-race festivities at his place included eggs and toast and jamming out on Rock Band.

Splits: 5:53 - 6:08 - 6:50

I came in 5th in my age group out of 40 guys, and 19th out of 748!

My computer is due to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. YESSSS.

Alison - 4

Time: 4 miles; Distance: 36

The girl on the treadmill next to me is running in a thong. Ouch.

1.6-mile loop in 12:26 and 12:21, 1.4-mile loop in 10:04 and 9:26. Started off real slow this morning, but was at about 6:45 pace the last few miles.

23:37

Short, pathetic run. Just like my mileage total for the week. But, it's ok. Next week I will start running again I guess. Not sure if this stupid hip thing will ever go away, but I intend to keep running since it seems like it's not a stress fracture because it's so high up on my hip.

Alison - 4

Time: 37.5 mins; Distance: 4 miles.

I felt so much better after today's run. Followed by a yoga class. I notice my legs aren't as tight today as they often are when I run. I also amped up my protein today (and the following day) and I bet that helped too.

Friday, October 23, 2009

Luke - 8.25

8.25mi, 63:50 (7:44)

Hill run. It had rained all day so the trails were pretty muddy, and slick in some parts. It had been a while since I'd done hills (not including the disastrous run of last Saturday) so they were pretty tough. Felt all right by the end though.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Luke - 7

7mi, 53:09 (7:35)

Left at 10:30 (after It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia), so I was only able to do 2 mile loops on the bark (7:52 and 7:47). I did the rest on the track and took splits every lap. If you are a normal person, i.e. you don't want to know how long ever quarter mile of my training run took me, you can stop reading now. 1:58, 1:57, 1:59, 1:50, 1:53, 1:55, 1:48, 1:52, 1:48, 1:46, 1:53, 1:52, 1:54, 1:50, 1:51.

Alison - 4

Time: 36.5 Distance: 4 miles

My grandpa said I ran "a four-mile marathon" today. He is cute.

Has anyone seen Spirit of the Marathon? I am going to watch it on Netflix Instant.

Luke - 11

11mi, 81:08 (7:22)

1.6-mile loops in 12:27 and 12:14, 1.4-mile loops in 9:33 and 9:33. Started out today super slow, but was under 7-minute pace by about halfway through.

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Luke - 6.5

6.5mi, 51:18 (7:53)

Mile loops of 7:39, 7:48, 7:52, 7:58, and 8:18. As Zack called it, a "regression" run. I was just feeling tired all over. Some days are like that, even in Australia. I am not discouraged though; I know tomorrow's runs will be better.

Steve - 4

My only run this week so far. I know. It's sad. I have been taking some time off because of worries about the hip and I figured it would be good to take a bit of a break after the half marathon. After this week, I think I am going to start building up again. One thing I am going to strive for moving forward is balance. By that, I mean doing other athletic activities besides running. I feel so frail these days, like my body would fall apart if I played basketball the way I was 2 years ago. I'm going to start doing a bunch of core work and actually lift a weight or two. Anyway, this run felt ok. It was on the track with the Flyers, so I ran it probably a bit too fast. I did 2.5 miles around 7:15 pace after not really running anywhere near that pace for awhile. I was a bit sore after this run for a few days.

Chris - 6.45

51:04 - 7:55 pace

This run made no sense, and slightly concerns me. I decided after starting out kind of quick that I wanted to run a slower pace and just get the mileage, but by the end I was struggling as if I couldn't have gone any faster even if I wanted to. Afterwards I was unusually tired, and my legs were feeling it pretty good too. I hope this doesn't carry through to race day. Speaking of which, since I'm a dumbass I waited too long to register online, it's now closed. I'm in Corvallis until Saturday afternoon so unless my buddy Darren can pay my fee and fill out my registration for me, as well as go pick uphe race packet on Saturday, I'm going to have to register the day of the race. Which we all know is going to be way more stressful than anyone needs on race day. So I'm kinda mad at myself for putting off registering.

James - 3.7

28:48

So very nearly didn't go today due to having so much stuff to do, but managed to incorporate it into getting some other things done too, so got a slightly different route. Feeling pretty good afterwards. Might be because I ate well before going and am eating well now. Not sure when my next run will be I'm afraid. I can hear Luke screaming even though he likes us to think he's so calm and cool and blase and deadpan.

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Luke - 6.25

6.25mi, 48:20 (7:44)

Mile loops of 8:10, 7:44, 7:47, 7:44, and 7:36. I had a feeling the run wouldn't be very fast, since my legs were still a bit tired from the morning run, so I just made sure I got the mileage in, and concentrated on my form. On the way back I did one stride, just to feel a little bit of speed. And then afterwards I had DoughCo! Mmmmmm.

Alison - 4.5

Distance: 4.5 miles; Time: 38min

TENGO SED!

Luke - 10

10mi, 72:35 (7:15)

1.4-mile loop in 12:05, 1.4-mile loop in 9:59, 2 miles barefoot on grass. The sun was out, but the ground was still fairly cold.

Monday, October 19, 2009

Chris - 5.04

37:03 - 7:21 pace

Was expecting this run to be faster since I didn't run yesterday. But I didn't sleep as much last night as I usually do, and worked a decent amount of OT today, so I was pretty devoid of energy. I'm going to run about 10 miles this week I think. Coupled with the mountain bike ride Friday I should get plenty of exercise and rest so my legs will be fresh for the 5k of my life. This week is going to be awesome - big race this coming Sunday, taking 2 days of vaca to go to Corvallis to hang and mountain bike with 2 of my best buddies, and today I talked to the hiring manager of the position I applied for at work and it sounds like I have a decent shot at getting it!

Alex - 4.02

29:20 (7:17)

That felt good. Probably a faster pace than that, as I got stuck at a crosswalk for awhile. I really need to get in the habit of pausing my timer when that happens. I'm not going to be able to run tomorrow, so I decided to have back to back running days even though that wasn't in my rehab plan. Luckily, although there was some tenderness, this run felt really good. It was too dark to run the trail so I ran on The Strand, which is all concrete, but I felt strong and even ran a hill to finish the run. Flying to Seattle tomorrow. Love running in that air.

Luke - 10

10mi, 70:25 (7:02)

Mile loops of 7:32, 7:29, 7:21, 7:02, 6:57, 6:49, 6:44, and 6:30. So Friday I didn't run because I had a ton of homework and hadn't slept Thursday night, and then Saturday was a disaster of a run, and yesterday I was feeling sick in the morning (that would be because of the previous night's beers) and then did homework all afternoon and never got out for a run, so I had done 2.5 miles in three days. I was like, "Who am I, James?" Just kidding... Anyway, I wasn't sure how I'd feel today. I guess it was pretty much as I expected: fairly fast since my legs had rested, but fairly short since I'm not used to running a lot. I'm about to do some pushups, so that's good.

James - 3.3

25:51

Pretty good speed I think. Still not planning on doing any really far distances yet. I'm getting reaaaaaaaaaaally bored of the places I run though, I might try hopping on the tram and finding somewhere else to start from. I am now wearing the shirt I got from my first race in 2003 (in which I did really shit). Do you all keep your running things?

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Alison - 5

I am not sure of my time. I ran into a law school colleague and ended up talking to them for 20 mins so my run was splintered into two parts. I would guess around 45 mins though because I was running steady but not fast. I am positive about the distance though.

She's going the distance!

I keep a notebook of my runs now. I hate getting on the computer after work after staring at pleadings all day, so this way I can keep accurate records but still enter them in on one day, even though it ruins the insant-nature of a blog. Sorry. But I'm a fun nice girl so maybe you will forgive me. Also if you come to my house on Halloween, I will have the best candy.

Alex - 3.14

22:57 (7:17)

Today was my first run back since I hurt my knee about a week and a half ago. I was hoping to make my first run back in Central Park, but my New York trip got cancelled and I'm still in LA. So today, like Steve, I ran the trail in Manhattan beach. It's nowhere near as nice as Pre's Trail, but it's better than concrete.

I wanted to be conservative and steady with my mileage and pace, and I think I accomplished that. Overall I felt pretty good considering the amount of time I took off. The first 1/2 mile was rough, but then I got in a rhythm. I'd say that my knee was at about 80% and I'll see how it feels tonight and tomorrow before I decide what I'll do on Tuesday. My guess is that I'll do the same run on Tuesday and see if I feel stronger.

Feels good to be back, I was starting to feel really sluggish.

Weekly Mileage Totals, 10/11-10/17

Zack and I drove to Mount Pisgah for a run. I figured we could find some not-insanely-hilly trails around the base of it, in the arboretum. We looked at a poorly-drawn map at the start and figured out a place to go, and about 50m in we realized it was just absolutely ridiculously difficult. We started laughing at how ridiculously steep this trail was (we had picked it hoping it would be gradual) and I had to stop because I couldn't breathe, due to laughing so hard and due to trying to run up such a steep hill. We continued up it, stopping every once in a while to rest, especially because Zack had originally wanted to go easy because his leg has been hurting. When we got to another trail we took it just to stop going uphill--this was at about 6½ minutes, and we had probably not even gone a half mile. The second trail was more narrow than single-track, and had a bunch of places where it would be easy to trip and fall or twist an ankle. We took this trail maybe a mile, but it was getting dark and Zack's leg was hurting so we wanted to get back, and the trail was definitely heading away from the parking lot. So we took a trail that was even skinnier than the one we were on, and it went down probably even steeper than the uphill we had started on. Every once in a while we could sorta run a little, but mostly it was gingerly stepping down. I don't remember how long that lasted--I only had my watch going when we were actually running. It eventually came to a clearing, and there was a nice big bark trail that we got on which was absolutely great for running. It would have been perfect if we had started out on this trail. We took it back to the parking lot and headed out, deciding that we had run 2.5 miles and that it had pretty much been a disaster.
We got Mexican food afterwards, and we'll head back to Mount Pisgah some other time and take the good trails, so the day wasn't a complete loss.

Steve. - 7.5

64:08 (8:33)

My first proper run since my half marathon last week. Headed out to the wood chips and dirt of the old Manhattan Beach trail. The weather here is weird lately. It was freezing and raining for like two days and now its 80-90 degrees. So the bottom line is Socal is awesome, cuz usually it's the latter. Anyway, I was cramping a bit on this one, but nothing like the pain from the half marathon. Took it pretty easy for the most part. Sped it up a bit in the last mile. Had to take a few 2 mile splits when I missed the marker a few times...

18:26, 17:07, 8:26, 8:05, 4:16, 7:47.

Chris - 5.04

36:57 - 7:19 pace

I kinda had to make myself go on this run, because I hadn't been home all day and was stressed out. Fourth run in 4 days though, so I'm happy about that. My freaking car battery died last night, so I had to take it into Les Schwab this morning to get it checked out and replaced. Apparently the one that died 4 years into its life had a 72 month warranty, so I got 33% off the sticker price of a new one. Then I came back to my folks and worked on my old hard drive for a bit. Good news is that the information is intact (yay!), bad news is that some of it is myteriously inaccesible. Couldn't view, change name or move/copy some select files. Very frustrating. Good thing running is a great stress reliever!

Oh, and my Sherwood CD preorder FINALLY came in the mail today! Woo hoo! I'll be listening to Qu a ton in the foreseeable future I'm sure. Hope you all are having a great weekend so far.

James - 4

29:14

Just in time to get a place in this weeks totals, even if it's last! The run was mostly okay, and when I got back I soaked my leg in the bath (well, and the rest of me too). Earlier this week I went to a fancy hotel with a friend who had a free pass for the pool/gym/jacuzzi/sauna/steam room/cold plunge! So let's hope all the hot and cold extremes helped my leg. Just so you don't think that while I've not been running I have been sitting around like a rich slob. In the sauna.

Chris - 6.45

46:20 - 7:11 pace

What a great run! I felt so good, as evidenced by the great pace. An absolutely beautiful fall day/night here. I ended up taking off my shirt during the run because it was juust warm enough to be able to. Got hollered at by 5 girls, 4 of whom I passed while going down a slight hill. They were on the sidewalk doing this cheerleader stand thing, where two girls face each other and the third is standing on their thighs with her hands in the air above her head (the 4th was watching them from the side). They made noise as I flew by and I asked them if they were having fun, of course to which they responded postively. Then a couple steps later I turned my head back and yelled "Don't fall!". Yes I'm a dork, thank you. As I ran past the high school there was a ton of people filing in for the evening's football game, so that was neat to hear all the sights and sounds of the pregame fesitivites. It must've been their homecoming game because they had these little mini-floats going around the end zone with sirens and stuff blaring away. Brought back lots of good memories from the ol' high school days. I'm getting really excited for the race next weekend! Next week in general is going to be awesome - three day work week, hanging with 2 of my 3 best buddies in Corvallis for a couple days, doing some mountain biking with them, and then back here for what I'm sure will be an epic race!

Oh and since I've been talking about it all week - I decided which computer I'm going to get! Bought it online just a few minutes ago =). Unfortunately it won't ship until the 27th. But I will be rewarded for my patience with a brand spankin' new kick ass machine!

Chris - 3.47

24:22 - 7:01 pace

Had to make this run short because I needed to get over to my parents to make a final decision on what computer I'm going to buy.

My dad is leaving tomorrow to go on a trip to Yosemite with his sister and a friend of hers, so I wanted to go through everything one more time with him tonight to make sure I'm getting exactly what I want. I'm not good at spending lots of money so when I get new stuff (especially techonology), I like to do lots of research to get myself up to speed on what's out there and what fits my needs.

Zack - 5.5

40:47 (7:25)

Pre's Trail 1.4 mile loop in the middle. Morning of my first cumulative exam in the doctoral program at UO. The exam wasn't until 7PM and I did not have to teach any classes/worry about my research today, so I felt a morning run was in order. Ran with Luke again on an insanely fine fall day. 55F and sunny with the leaves changing to all sorts of bright colors. On Pre's Trail, I had Centrowitz and some other crazy speedy UO XC guys pass by. Despite the inspiration from seeing them cruise with ease, I could not quicken my pace. First 3 miles I think I was still asleep, but after that I settled in to an okay tempo. Think i'll be back to feeling good in no time. But on a day as scenic as this, simply being able to get out and run is a blessing and everything else is a bonus!

Luke - 11

11mi, 80:51 (7:21)

3x1.4-mile loop in 10:38, 10:10, 10:09, then 20 minutes barefoot on the grass. The sun was out for a bit this morning, so the grass was the perfect temperature.

8.5mi, 64:06 (7:32)

Mile loops of 7:49, 7:45, 7:35, 7:22, 7:12, 7:03, and 7:45. Don't know what happened on that last one...I was expecting to do that one and two more all under 7:00, but coming into the end of the previous one I just ran out of juice.

Steve - 4.12 (formerly X)

I need to look at my watch to see how much I ran. I did a bunch of easy laps around the track yesterday with the Flyers. My first run since the half marathon on Sunday. I feel like I'm recovered mostly and will probably run on Thursday also.

Not sure on the exact distance. I had to walk for a bit because I was about to mess my pants. In fact, if there wasn't a port-o-pottie next to this middle school's soccer field, I'm pretty sure there's no way I would have made it home (which is a scary thought). I was still about a half mile or so from home. Other than that I felt pretty good in the run. It was raining during the first part, and then when I passed by the HS the marching band was out, so that put a little bounce in my step as I pretended they were playing theme music for my run. Daaaaaah dahdah dah dahhhhh! Cue the cymbals! In other news I'm getting much closer to deciding on what my new laptop is going to be. Haven't tried recovering the data yet - I'll probably do that this weekend.

Luke - 8

8mi, 59:03 (7:22)

1.4-mile loop in 10:17, 1.6-mile loop in 12:11. Started out going on a 5.5-miler with Zack, but I felt good so I extended it. 18 miles on the day, been a while since I've done that.

Zack - 5.5

40:01 (7:17)

Evening jaunt around Pre's Trail with Luke (before he branched off) in the pouring rain. Perfect running environment, however my legs continue to feel terrible. About mile 4 or so had to just keep my head up and make it home.

Luke - 10

10mi, 74:33 (7:27)

1.6-mile loop in 12:06, 1.4-mile loop in 10:06, 2 miles barefoot on the grass. The sun was not out this morning, so the ground was absolutely freezing. My feet went numb less than a mile into the barefoot portion. I may have to give up on the barefoot stuff until Spring, or at least until I go down to Southern California for Christmas.

Luke - 6.25

6.25mi, 44:41 (7:08)

Mile loops of 7:32, 7:22, 7:20, 7:16, and 6:02. Ran with Zack; we both felt pretty crappy but managed to keep the pace honest.

Chris - 5.04

36:46 - 7:17 pace

Posting this week is going to be tough. My laptop wouldn't start up on Sunday morning and is pretty much a paperweight now. My dad thinks a chip on the motherboard is going bad, so hopefully we'll be able to retrieve everything from my hard drive. Thus, I'm keeping track of my runs on paper and trying to remember the times so I can post here at work. I didn't run Sunday because I hung out with my nephew Alex all weekend and we stayed up late Sat. night playing video games, so after sleeping in and taking him home, added with the huge stress of my computer crashing, I didn't have any energy to do a long run Sunday. I really want to try to get in a bunch of miles this week since it's the last normal week before I do an easy week for the race.

Alison - 4

Quick run after a long day at work. After being a desk jockey for 8 hours, stretching my legs out on the treadmill will feel nice. The heat index was 101 and humidity at 90%, so def no outdoor running yet.

Thinking about a race in November. Hoping I can pull it together by then.

Zack - 6.25

45:01 (7:12)

Luke summed up this night time 5-lap effort well. My shins are hurting, but we settled down into some quicker laps and let loose a bit on the last lap. (7:32, 7:22, 7:20, 7:16, 6:27) . Note the last lap, I was dropped by 25 seconds! Luke took off around 800m. So many miles being ran by our bunch. I love it. I am insanely busy with grad school right now. Should cool off within a week and that means more mileage. Can't wait.

Cheers everyone

Luke - 10.5

10.5mi, 80:16 (7:38)

Mile loops of 7:49, 7:39, 7:41, 7:39, 7:21, 7:34, 7:33, 7:43, and 7:42. First four with Zack. Didn't feel tired really at all, but my left ankle is feeling a bit tender.

Steve - 14.2

So it has taken me awhile to come around to writing my recap of my participation in the 25th Annual Long Beach Half Marathon. Pretty much everything went wrong that could go wrong, but I am happy to say I completed the race in a time of 1:40:13. It was pretty painful for the last 3-4 miles, but I made it!

I previously wrote a long rambling recap of all the bad things, but I deleted it cuz it was too pathetc. I'll just sum it up in a sentence: I got there late (as usual), had to start in the middle with the walkers/joggers, lost my car key, found my car key, lost it again for good(had to get a tow truck to jimmy the lock after the race), had a horrible cramp/muscle pull in my side, wanted to die, and barely made it through. That's it.

10K split of 45:48.

Alison - 4.5

Distance: 4.5 miles; Time: Right about 40 even

I had the horrible theme from the Gilmore Girls in my head the entire time.

Started out pretty stiff and slow, and sped it up from there. Really windy this morning. I ended up taking off my long sleeve once I got into the neighborhoods where the wind wasn't blowing as bad. I didn't feel that great on this run so I'm surprised I was able to keep my pace this low. Guess that's good!

I picked up my nephew after work yesterday so we're having fun playing PS3 and hanging out. Watched The Blues Brothers last night, which he had never seen. Such a great movie!

Luke - 7

Duck Dash 5k

Got up at 7am and had an english muffin and a banana, and got my outfit all ready. My short navy blue racing shorts, with my basketball shorts over them, with warmup pants over them, and a white undershirt with my red lightning bolt long-sleeved shirt over that, and mittens and a hat. I went to Amazon for a mile on the trail, then over to Hayward Field where I met up with Zack after about 3.25 miles of warmup. Went to the bathroom then did maybe a half mile more with Zack then changed into my racing flats and stripped down to just shorts and my (old high school) singlet. I headed onto Hayward Field feeling pretty good in the legs, but after one stride I realized my hands were freezing, so I went back to the car and grabbed my mittens. I got to the start line just in time to talk to Zack and this crazy 49-year-old named Randy Hilliard, who 3-5 years ago would always finish near me in 5ks (around mid- to low-18s)...he's more of a mid-19s guy now, and I am of course super fast. Also on the line were a bunch of guys from the UO Running Club, so I figured I probably wouldn't figure to be winning.

The first 600 meters of the race were 1½ laps of Hayward Field, and I settled in to the lead pack feeling pretty good, trying to hug the rail instead of going around people at the start--better to be slightly off pace and go a shorter distance than to waste energy trying to move around on the turns. They had a guy reading times at the 400m mark, which was nice. I came through in 82 or 83 (5:30 pace) and it felt super easy. I moved around a few people on the backstretch, and then we exited the stadium and started going uphill. In front were a guy in a red jersey and two guys in UO Running Club jerseys, and then me and 4-5 other guys in a chase pack, maybe 10 seconds back. I decided not to go all out on the uphill, since I know that's not where I'm at my best, and I could catch people on the downhill. At the top of the hill was the one-mile mark, which I passed in 5:28, in I think fifth or sixth (maybe seventh or eighth) place.

The next half-mile was downhill, and I was in fourth place by the time it flattened out. The two guys in the green UORC jerseys were about 80m in front of me, and the guy in red was another 50m in front of them. My plan was to run the race like it was only two miles and hold on until the finish, and I was feeling really fast after the downhill, so I pushed hard to catch the guys in green. They both must have been dying pretty hard, because I made up the 80m in no time. I went past the first like he was jogging, and waited behind the second for a few seconds before surging away from him too. Red was probably still 50m in front of me when I came through the second mile in 5:11.

The course then took a left onto a street for about a block, and then turned right for an out-and-back section. There was an orange cone with arrows going around the left side of it for the way out, and then the inside arrow was for coming back. There was absolutely no one around and I wasn't completely sure that I had to go around the cone the long way, but I figured I should just to be safe. As I turned the corner I looked back to make sure the two UORC guys went around it too, and they did, so I felt good about my decision. The guy in red, meanwhile, had put even more of a gap on me, so I just kept pushing to try and catch him. I figured he was out of reach, but I did want to hang onto second place, and the guys in green weren't that far behind me. The out-and-back section had us go around a cone, so pretty much a 180º on a dime, of course taking away all your momentum. From there it was about 1/3 of a mile uphill, 1/4 of a mile downhill, and 200m on the track to the finish. I saw Zack as he was heading down the hill, and gave him a very small, very energy-efficient wave. The last portion of uphill was the first time in the race I didn't feel super strong, but I knew if I made it up without dying I'd be home free with second since I will never lose ground on a downhill. When I turned the corner onto the downhill I could see that red had put even more ground on me, but I pushed hard to Hayward, and came through the third mile in 5:23. I passed the third mile marker just as first place was finishing, and I was able to sprint pretty well to the finish, making sure I was on my toes with quick turnover, and came through in 16:33, a PR by 9 seconds.

I congratulated the first and third place runners and then headed up the infield until I saw Zack, and I cheered him on as he kicked away from another runner. A bit later we grabbed some water and bananas and granola bars and went to the car, where I put all my layers back on. We came back for the awards ceremony, and I got a second-place ribbon for overall and a second-place ribbon for my age group, but Zack got a first-place ribbon for his age group, since everyone in front of him was either 15-19 or 25-29. I also won a UO football shirt in a random drawing (which I traded to Zack for a T-shirt from his old work, since it was slightly too big for me). Oh and the best part of the day was when Randy Hilliard, who won the Masters (40+) division at last year's Duck Dash, asked Zack if he was over forty years old.

I was definitely happy with my performance; someone was saying it "wasn't a PR course" because of the hills and the copious amounts of turns. Considering that, and the fact that I've done almost no speedwork lately, I'm very optimistic for future races. Zack has a couple friends coming into Eugene for Thanksgiving, and one of them is very near my ability level as a runner, so I'm really looking forward to racing him in the Turkey Stuffer. I might have a shot at going under 16 in either that race or the one in L.A. that Steve and I are doing. It would be crazy to have a 5k PR that started with the word "fifteen".

Steve - 3.4

(29:30)

Real easy on mostly grass. A friend of mine from the Flyers is going to help pace me tomorrow. He's running the New York Marathon next month and his goal pace is about the same as my half marathon goal pace of 6:52. So we'll see how it goes...ok gotta finish watching the Michigan-Iowa game that I recorded and then sleep early. Gotta wake up at 4:30 am! Out

Got up at 7 to get a few extra miles in since last night's run was so short. It was 37º and I was surprised to even be under 8-minute pace...tomorrow's 5k at 8:30am is gonna be tough; I'll have to get in a pretty long warmup if I want my legs to work properly.

Luke - 3.5

Usually it takes 4-5 miles for the stomach problems to start, but tonight the bastard dispensed with the pleasantries and just acted like a jerk from the first step. Did two mile loops, took a pitstop, and did a lap on the track before heading home.

Steve - 3

29:10

I didn't want to run last night, but I finally decided to late. Easy 3 on the grass. It helped that I bought some whoopie pies as an incentive for myself to eat after the run.

Chris - 6.45

47:09 - 7:18 pace

I was going to do this run tomorrow, because I planned on hanging out with my friend Michaela - but the Red Sox/Angels game 1 was on and I hadn't been home much the past 2 nights, so she canceled (I suspect b/c she didn't want to watch 3 hours of baseball). Significantly less cars tonight, which made for a more enjoyable run. I think this is a PR for my Magneto run, so that's cool.

Alex - 2.28

16:28 (7:11)

Well, fuck. This was supposed to be a Pre's Trail loop, but about half way through my knee began to throb and I tried to start back up after a break to stretch, but it was no use. I have full range of motion, and it didn't hurt in the beginning, so I'm hoping that this is just a temporary inflammation thing. I'm heading out of town tonight for work, so I'm going to be cautious and give myself a week off to just rest, stretch, etc. and hope that I can get back in the swing of things in the next couple of weeks. I'll keep checking on here to see how you guys are doing and I hope to be back posting mileage by next weekend.

Alison - 2

Quick run. I don't got all day you know.

Man I am gettin' skinny again.

Not waking up with calf cramps anymore, so either I am doing something really wrong, or really really right.

Luke - 9.5

9.5mi, 71:05 (7:28)

1.6-mile loop in 12:09, 1.4-mile loop in 9:53, 13:10 of barefoot running in the grass. I was wearing mittens for the cold, but it was late enough in the morning that my feet weren't frozen.

Zack - 4.25

29:45 (7:00)

Three laps of the Amazon Trail, I have been hurting the past few days with some ankle/joint pain but hopefully on the mend for the Duck Dash 5k this weekend. Last mile loop on the trail: 6:55.

Steve - 5.25

Hit the track with the Flyers. Fall has set in Southern California and the temperature has dropped considerably. I should probably start wearing some moderately warm clothes instead of just a t-shirt and shorts. I did a nice long 2 mile warmup and then 2 separate mile intervals with about a minute recovery. I did them close to my half marathon goal pace. First was 6:48, second was 6:43. They both felt easy, which is a good sign. Closed it out with a nice easy cooldown. I did 2 laps barefoot but the grass was so wet and cold I had to put my shoes back on. I'm going to run on Thursday night and Saturday, both easy runs, and then the race is on Sunday.

Luke - 7.25

7.25mi, 54:15 (7:28)

Mile loops of 7:57, 7:39, 7:33, and 7:33, then a pitstop, then finished up on the track. I figured while I was there I might as well do a little fartlek, so I did 400 off, 400 on for two miles. Splits of 1:54, 95, 2:00, 91, 2:03, 92, 2:03, 91. The fast portions didn't feel too hard at all, and when I got home I was barely breathing heavily and felt great. So that's cool.

Alex - 2.38

17:12 (7:12)

Today was a street run, and I didn't feel good or run well, but it was a good run. Yesterday, a few hours after my run I was playing with my friend's kid (for Luke, I'm talking about Malachi) and my surgically repaired knee locked up and me and then had a big pop. It felt like the bones popped out of the joint and then popped back in. It's happened to me a couple of times before, but normally when I'm in a pool and never this bad. The knee continued to bother me all night and was still hurting this morning. I had full range of motion, but it felt a little creaky and I was nervous about running.

When I first hurt my knee I was 16 and for a long time they didn't think I'd ever run again. Rehab included 3 months in a straight leg cast with no weight on my leg, followed by 6 months of rehab to regain some strength, the leg was incredibly atrophied, and range of motion. Then I began to jog lightly a few times a week for another 3 months, and a year after the surgery I began to run again. All said and done it was at least two years before the knee felt normal again.

To say the least, taking up running last year was not the best advised decision I've ever made, but I have actually found that it has helped the overall health of my knee and leg much more than it has hurt it and I rarely have pain. This is an incredibly long way of saying that today was a little bit scary. I did not feel great on the run, but as the run went on my confidence increased and I think that with in a few days I could be back to normal. It was however, a reminder that for someone who was once told they'd never run again and potentially would need a knee replacement before they graduated high school, I need to continue to be modest with my running goals and make sure that I stay healthy so that I can continue to run for a long time.

Back on the road tomorrow,
Alex

Chris - 6.45

49:31 - 7:40 pace

I took Monday off on purpose, but Tuesday I didn't put two and two together and realized I wouldn't be able to run because I went to the Blazers first exhibition game with my dad. I thought about running afterwards but I had 2 pints of beer at the game and by the time I got home I was pretty sleepy. So now my plan is to do two of my Magneto loops, and then a 5 miler on Saturday will put me around 27 miles for the week I believe. I felt great on this run because of the two days rest, but I held back a bit since I know I'd need the energy for my next weekday run. I don't know why it is, but my stomach seems to be bothering me more lately on the longer runs. Today I made it to the corner of my neighborhood before it started up, and I did a comical shuffle-run up the hill and into my house. Maybe I need more fiber in my diet, I dunno.

Distance: 6 miles; Time: 52 mins (as an attorney, I think of this as nearly .9 billable hours)
Locale: On the treadmill next to the Marlon Brando lookalike (Streetcar days not Dr Moreau days) on the stairmaster.

I've been feeling better since I started running.Good stress relief. Also, I just got digital cable (hbohbohbo) so I've been doing yoga, pilates and bollywood cardio dance off the FitTV channel to make up for all the time I'm watching the premium channels (IFC, Sundance, and uh HBO).

P.S. HBO's Bored to Death (starring Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifinakis and Ted Danson) is one of my new favorite shows.

My feet hurt. I was trying to lure my cat into kneading them by spreading juice from his canned cat food on them. It did not work. I was not very lucid at this point.

You know I don't like Luke to worry so I took it easy today. With the mileage and speed anyway, I was really pounding out those last 800 meters.* I have realized that while I am not an aggressive person at all**, I am a really aggressive runner. I also brush my teeth aggressively.

I am kinda sad that my Significant Other recently topped my 5K PR, but I honestly knew it was a matter of time. The boy is built for speed.

Once again, I am concerned about my knees. This probably means I am doing something right. Even though I haven't been running daily for a long time (or 5-6x weekly), it's been a lot easier to get back into than I thought because I've kept up some hardcore cardio. It's not the same, but it has its place.

56:56 (7:18)

Ran both Pre's Trail loops with Luke. Had an incredible day at Crater Lake yesterday, completing our 5 mile hike up to 8939 ft. But as a result felt terrible and sore throughout my run today. I don't know if I happened to be simply run down, or perhaps was more tired out by the higher elevations. Despite the run being pretty rough, it is a great start to the week as far as mileage goes.

Top 10 out of a few hundred

Sorry for the vague ranking, but to my surprise there was no more accurate measurement at this race. I've been spoiled on bigger ones. The top 10 is according to my parents who were at the finish line, so who knows, but first place was a time of 19:44, so most of you could have won this race.

The day started with me running over hills in this park desperately looking for the start line. I ran down a bumpy one, stepped up to my heel in mud, and ran frantically some more. Got to the registration desk to pick up my information pack 3 minutes before start time, then found out I didn't need to even wear my number and there was no timechip. Tried desperately to get long trousers off over trainers, to no success, had to take shoes off first (I had shorts underneath). Jogged over to start line literally as the 10 second countdown started. This has been so cinematic, I thought. Surely I will win!

Well I didn't, and because I didn't have time to pay attention at the start I had no idea how near the front I was, although I passed a lot of people and very few passed me. For most of the race I was with or near 5 other people, which was kinda fun, to have that few people keeping your pace. My legs were fine, but I felt exhausted almost straight away, again. And my shoelace came undone after 3 minutes. And even though it was a race in a park we had to dodge horses and cars. Even though it was an environmental event.

Oh yes, I then went and planted a Silver Birch tree! The event was called a tree-athlon, you see. It was very satisfying.

I was pissed off for a while afterwards by a man on the winners stage who said something shitty and sexist when he was supposed to be congratulating the female runner-up. I shouted "Thanks Bernard Manning!" If you want to read an email I sent about this incident, complete with bile, you can click here.

Luke - 12.75

12.75mi, 95:02 (7:27)

Did both loops of Pre's Trail with Zack, then headed into the hills for a few more miles on my own. Near the end of the run I briefly forayed into the Masonic Cemetery for a few hills, and stopped to read the story near one of the graves. This one was Eugene's "first notable black citizen," a streetcar driver in the mid to late 1800s. He came to Eugene with a mule and got the mule to tow the streetcar (at a top speed of 6mph). They even had a picture of him from 1896 with his mule and streetcar.

Neither Zack nor I ran yesterday, but we did get a workout. We went down to Crater Lake and hiked to the highest point in the state park, Mount Scott, almost 9000 feet above sea level. We got a bunch of pictures and came back home very exhausted.

We've had some cooler temps here too. For instance, it was only 88* today, so I guess you could say it is no longer oppresively hot. In fact, one day this week was a positively chilly 84* and I had to bust out my hoodie. Maybe in a couple of weeks I will be able to hit the trail outside again.

Expect some major mileage this week. If you are Luke, you might wonder if I am stressed out about something. Luke is always right.

Started out slow and picked it up from there. The last 3/4 mile or so I tried to really kick it in. Knees bothered me a bit today.

I forgot to mention - during the latter part of my run Thursday, an older guy in his car up about 50 yards in front of me slowed down and was driving in the bicycle lane that I was running in. It seemed pretty obvious to me that he was doing it in purpose so I couldn't run by him. Very shortly after I noticed that I just jumped up onto the curb and continued on. I stared at him as he drove by (ignoring me), once again pondering if I should flip the double birds or not. I jumped back into the road once he passed, and finally decided to turn around and run backwards while waving my arms in the air at him. I had my bright red long sleeve tech T on so I was hoping he'd see me. He turned right into a street about 80 yards behind me, and I was hoping he was turning around to come back toward me, but unfortunately that didn't happen. I wished later that I had continued just running in the bike lane right up to his car to see how he'd react. Passive aggressive people are so weird. What a jackass...

Steve - 8.7

So today was kind of a rehearsal for my half marathon next week. I warmed up about a mile and then did a 5 mile tempo run. My goal was to run right around 6:50-7:00 pace. It was pretty hot out, but I managed to stay on pace for nearly the whole way. My pace did slow slightly as the run went on, but the final 3/4 of a mile I sped it up a bit. Overall I was pretty pleased. I'm not sure if i can run this fast for 13.1 miles, but I'll give it a shot. I'll most likely start slower so I can work up to my goal pace as the race goes on. I took some splits at different intersections so I could look at my times later. When I did my cool down I was cramping real bad in my side after about 15 min, probably because I hadn't eaten anything. So I'll have to make sure I "fuel" myself during the race after about 6-7 miles. Also I wore my trainers because I decided I'm going to wear them for the race instead of my Nike Frees. Not sure if I can handle 13.1 in those right now.

Tough loss for the Wolverines today. I wore a new Michigan football shirt I got during the run, but it wasn't quite enough to carry them to the win...

Luke - 11.25

11.25mi, 79:28 (7:03)

Mile loops of 7:44, 7:31, 7:27, 7:17, 7:13, 7:02, 6:54, 6:39, 6:30, and 5:57. I really wanted to get under 6 on the last one, so I'm pretty happy. The run definitely took a bit out of me; I had to work at it near the end.

Alex - 3.03

I time my runs using Nike+, which is a great tool, but sometimes varies one or two tenths of a mile from day to day. Today's run was a morning run from my house (near Oakway Golf Course) to Sheldon High School, with a loop around the track and back home. It's mostly sidewalk and some street running, but I felt really strong throughout the run and had I not stopped to talk to a neighbor while forgetting to pause my Nike+ my pace & time probably would have reflected. Since I see some periphery notes and non sequiturs on others' posts I'll add that I wear Nike Lunar Glides and today I listened to John Mayer on my iPod while I ran. I also narrowly missed stepping in dog poop, twice.

Steve - 4.9

42:23 (8:39)

Easy run. Planning on one final faster run tomorrow around half marathon goal pace for 5-6 miles and then a really easy week.

Alex aka The New Guy

Hi Everybody,

My name is Alex and I am the person from the previous blog who ran with Luke yesterday. I'm looking forward to setting some running goals and posting on here, but mostly I'm looking forward to outlasting all of your scare tactics that Luke is encouraging. I think I'm up to the task.

Pre's Trail - 6:50 pace.

I'll work on some goals, etc. and look forward to keeping up with you guys (literally, figuratively).

Thanks for having me,
Alex

Zack - 6.5

Oct. 1st: 6.5 miles 45:09 (6:57)
65 degrees as sun was setting, tempo on Rexius. Killed it! EZ warmup, 3.5 mile tempo (6:34, 6:32, 6:18, 3:09).

Felt very strong, solid 2nd mile up the hill. Tomorrow will be an easy day for sure.

Chris - 6.45

54:22 - 8:25 pace

Nice and brisk out when I started. Stomach bothered me toward the end, and my hands started to get a little cold, but other than that a pretty solid run. I know I'm used to doing a quicker pace but I've realized while piling on the mileage this week that sometimes your body just doesn't want to go faster. Also during this run I was excited to eat the cucumber I had in the fridge, but sadly when I got home and took it out, it was moldy and I had to throw it away =(. I'm so bad at eating my produce before it goes bad. In other news, my post about looking for a new job must've caught God's ear, because I got a call from some company that saw my resume on Monster.com. Unfortunately when I called Friday morning they turned out not to be so great. Oh well, it's a step in the right direction!

Luke - 8.9

8.9 mi, 63:54 (7:10)

Ran to Pre's Trail and did a ~4-mile loop with my buddy Alex at about 6:50 pace. On the way back, a guy passed me, and I was like, what, some big shot, huh, and then I noticed it was Galen Rupp. I ran right behind him for about a half mile. We were both crossing the same busy road where I usually have to wait like a minute for the light, so I figured I would say hi or whatever, but the walk sign happened to be on, so I didn't get to stop and talk to him. He was doing an easy 6:15 pace or so, just flying along.

Oh and I invited Alex to post here, so be sure to insult and exclude him in order to scare him off.

Luke - 10.6

10.6mi, 80:42 (7:36)

Pre's trail loops and about 19 minutes of barefoot grass running. It was bloody freezing; the sun only came out the minute I put my shoes back on. Luckily I am TUFF.
